The Wairakei Environmental Mitigation Charitable Trust was established to facilitate the enhancement, protection and management of a variety of geothermal and natural resources characteristics located within Environment Waikato's regional boundary. It addresses the environmental issues of the Wairakei Geothermal Power Station. Funding is allocated to those projects which comply with the purpose of the Trust.

November 1958 - Wairakei Geothermal Power Station commissioned
30 March 2001 - Resource Consents lodged with Environment Waikato
22 November 2001 - Fish and Game NZ and the Department of Conservation lodge Submissions against the Resource Consents
14 October 2003 - Memorandum of Understanding between Contact Energy, Fish and Game NZ and the Department of Conservation signed
19 December 2003 - Wairakei Environmental Mitigation Charitable Trust, Charitable Trust Deed signed
18 May 2004 - Inaugural meeting of the Wairakei Environmental Mitigation Charitable Trust
March and June 2004 - Resource Consent hearings commence
