Wairakei Environmental Mitigation Charitable Trust
The Wairakei Environmental Mitigation Charitable Trust was established to facilitate the enhancement, protection and management of a variety of
geothermal and natural resources characteristics located within Environment Waikato's regional boundary. It addresses the environmental issues
of the Wairakei Geothermal Power Station. Funding is allocated to those projects which comply with the purpose of the Trust.

Project 1

Department of Conservation (Taupo/Turangi) - Tokaanu Recreation Reserve restoration & protection  - This project  follows a 2005 project  (Tokaanu Thermal Area sinter formations).
The project will further investigate the feasibility of restoring thermal features at Tokaanu that have declined over the last 100 years, or to maintain and enhance the current range of features. This proposal aims ultimately to see fluid flows in the geothermal system within 200m of the Tokaanu bathhouse and to restore the thermal features including Taumatapuhipuhi geyser.

Project 2

Department of Conservation (Rotorua) - Waikite Geothermal Area Protection - Protection and restoration of significant geothermal wetland and associated geothermal features. Project will focus on defining future water levels. Newly defined wetland area will be partially bunded and existing drains blocked to raise water levels to historic levels. Entire wetland will be fenced off to protect wetland from grazing.  Project will ensure protection of the geothermal areas for next 20 years.

Project 3

Craters of the Moon Trust (Taupo) - Protection and Beautification of Craters of the Moon - Project includes study into cost of new viewing platform to OSH standards.  Proposed at the No 2 crater to protect the surrounding thermal area, allowing  people to view the crater without leaving the tracks and damaging the area. Planting to enhance and protect the thermal area with heat resistant plants and removal of noxious weeds to allow plants within the park to survive. Project also includes an upgrade  of  the visitor interpretation signage for this very popular site  visited by thousands of tourists every year.

Project 5

Eastern Regional Fish and Game (Rotorua) - Ohaaki Wetland Project - Project will utilise subsiding land to create a wetland while mitigating the ramping effects of the Waikato River by constructing a bund. It would provide stable water levels for the wetland and enable high value waterfowl habitat to develop. Bund will be 1100m long and 3m high following a subsidence contour giving 12ha of open water habitat. Three islands will be constructed within the wetlands and each island will be fully planted to maximise fowl breeding and rearing. The wetland will be managed by Fish & Game NZ and they will ballot the wetland for game bird hunting.
